Investment Management Services

If you want, I can take over the management of your investments.  That means that I select a portfolio of investments for you, place all the trades and monitor and adjust that portfolio over time.

Hiring me as your professional investment manager has many potential benefits, including:

  • Overcoming procrastination and other bad behavior

According to a study by the research firm Dalbar, Inc. the average person investing in stocks via mutual funds earned an annual rate of return of 3.98% in the 30 years leading up to 2016.  By contrast the stock market overall earned a 10.16% per year over the same period.

While it’s difficult to tease out all the factors led to such dramatic underperformance, I suspect that much of the shortfall was due to simple inertia.  Many people have a tendency to invest their money “when I get around to it”.  In some cases, the biggest value that an investment manager can provide is not ingenious investment ideas, but instead just making sure that your money is working hard on your behalf rather than sitting around waiting for you to find the time do something about it.

  • Managing risk

It’s critical to make sure that you’re taking the right kind of risk and avoiding the wrong kind.  For someone with a child about to start college, a stock market downturn could be disastrous if the child’s education fund is invested too aggressively.  Conversely, if you’ve got retirement funds that you don’t intend to fully exhaust for 30 or more years, then being too “conservative” puts your money at risk of being eaten away by inflation and missing out on hundreds of thousands of dollars in potential growth.

  • Managing costs

An extra few dollars here and there may not seem like much, but small savings now can add up to massive differences in the long term.

If you can save even ½ of 1% by cutting costs, you can end up with a lot more money over time.  If you start with $10,000 and manage to get a return of 8% rather than 7.5% by cutting investment costs, you’ll earn an additional $13,000 over 30 years.  That’s more than your entire initial capital, just for being careful with your costs.

Note that the above example only involves $10,000.  When you think about the kind of money that a person can accumulate over a lifetime the difference can be monumental.  That’s why I’m a huge proponent of ultra-low-cost investment vehicles such as index funds.

  • Saving time

In the pursuit of the best possible deal for my clients, I’m constantly examining the investment landscape to find the products that will provide those little advantages that make a big difference in the long run.  Even if you consider yourself an expert investor, if you think you might not actually take the time to consistently work on managing your investments, then it may make sense to hire someone to stay on top of it for you.  You’ll also free up your time to focus on your career or spend quality time with family and friends!
